No internet makes blogging complicated

So as you know we’ve been living off-grid for almost a month now. The amount of information I’ve accrued is crazy. Set up some stuff, fixed some and broke some others. At this point the main goals are, reliable battery charging and internet. Blogging gets tricky when you are not online.

I’ll be back on track soon, till then it’ll be small posts from my phone.

Progressing towards the goal

Mobile is the new stable

Mobile is the new stable

Serendipitous as our life is, we have made some great strides this past month. It is the end of a wonderful chapter on our journey, and we’ll be leaving the community for a more rustic lifestyle. Thanks to good ol’ Craigslist we have found a new place to live and a new “home”.

Is the Universe trying to tell me something?

This might be a little long winded but I have to share it with you.

Part One:

Since I’ve lived in this 2BR apartment I’ve been happy and have met many a great people in the area including my wife. I started gardening here and began my journey as a steward of life, nature and this planet we all call home.

We’ve (Erin and I) been feeling like getting out of dodge for a while and finding some land up north (Northern California). There we would build upon it natural buildings and create a living oasis of sorts, including things such as water works, food forests, live stock and host people to share the knowledge we’ve all accrued so as to pass it on to interested parties. Mostly the evolving plan.

We really wanted to do this, but our apartment is so nice, rent is so cheap and the area is so “hip”. I even have a nice area (40′ x 14′) in the back yard to garden in. This makes it hard to make the move out to the land.

Raised Field Agriculture in the Lake Titicaca Basin

Raised Field Agriculture
While reading my new awesome Permaculture Magazine I was struck by an article that spoke of an ancient Incan way of agriculture. This is called Raised Field Agriculture. People would dig up canals and pile the dirt to create raised beds. These canals help the plants by providing water most, if not all, of the year. This also creates a micro climate because of heat retention from the waterways, thereby protecting the plants from frost. If that is not enough to get you thinking of renting some heavy machinery… it’s reported that fish could have been raised there, creating a kind of aquaculture that at the same time replenishes the soil with some needed Nitrogen. Did I forget to mention canoeing?

Paradise found

Well almost. We checked out some land today. It was 120 acres in the LA area. Nice and close to all our awesome friends and family, but just out of the way enough to not be in the city. It had some oaks and a lot of sage all over. There were two building sites, unless we did an underground home. Something like this comes to mind. Also there was a ravine going through the property (good for ground water, etc.)

Before you get to excited, like I did. Immediately next to the property were some oil derricks. Actually they had mineral rights to any thing below 500′ underground and an easement through the middle of the land. All this made me uneasy because of the possibility of contamination to any possible ground water. Also the idea of having oil tankers driving through my property is not to appealing. Then there is the fact that very little of the land was even slightly level and the rest went from steep to very steep.  All that and the asking price was somewhat unreasonable. Maybe if we can get them to drop it…
