The bane of my existence! Can't wait till it's running...
I feel as though I’m loosing my mind! Setting up off grid energy when you are a laymen requires a lot of reading. Even getting cables to connect to the batteries takes quite a while of reading and pertinent forum research. Still all is coming together. Just got my Xantrex ProSine 2 inverter/charger and will soon be hooking it up. Solar coming up soon.

YES!
The other day I was chatting with my friend Aaron, and he mentioned a cool magazine he’s been looking at. YES! is the publication I speak of. They are right up my alley, maybe even yours. Also they have a buy one get one free deal for their yearly subscription. No this is not spam, and no I am not getting anything from promoting them (yet at least).
Check this pdf link out as a cool example of what they got.
Good people, Great stuff!
Ever heard of The Urban Farming Guys? They are a group of about twenty families who, purposely, moved to a bad neighborhood in Kansas. Why, you might ask, would someone do this? They are creating a mashup between creating community, going back to the land and reviving a neighborhood.
They have many great videos that will leave you aching to get your hands dirty.
Enjoy!
Home made power
There are many DIY projects on getting off grid energy. This one struck me as a good one to share and maybe make happen here on the land.
Great Permaculture Resource
Just found Permaculture Media Blog. This Blog is so full of information I just feel like I’ll never have to buy another book or film again. Best of all it’s all FREE!
You like documentary films? How about on permaculture/natural farming , or natural/green building, or peak oil/alternative energy, etc…
Read much? Well then throw your peepers at this permaculture/natural farming, or natural/green building, or peak oil/alternative energy, etc
I could do this all night long… Instead I’ll let you head on over and see for yourself.
Top Documentart Films
Ever feel like watching something interesting that will leave you thinking for a while?
Top Documentary Films is a page with an intimidating amount of free, and very informative films. I’m not familiar with the copyright status of these films, however I’m sure you could look that up yourself on the page.
I want this, bad!
We’ve had many a good times together but , alas, my trooper of a car is on it’s waning hours.
It’s hitting the 250,000 mark soon and sounding less like a well oiled machine and more like a tractor. Don’t get me wrong, I love this car, but it’s time to be realistic.
So in that vane, I’m looking at options. I’ve not settled on a car yet, but what I do know is that it will have this SVO conversion kit installed. I’ve mentioned my interest on a converted diesel bus before, but this is a much more attainable and logical goal… for now at least.
where there is a will there is a way
If you ever think you have no room to grow anything…
there is also the old door mounted cloth shoe holder you can convert to a little wall garden idea… hope your day went well
Thermosiphoning Passive Solar Water Heater
Build it Solar brings it again! This might be common knowledge but, heat rises and cold falls. This is the action behind thermosiphoning.
The short and sweet of it is that you run some cold water through metal pipes that are being hit by the sun to heat it. You have a circulating system where water from the tank (it’s raised higher than the pipes) falls as it cools, there by flowing to the heating pipes. As this water heats from the sun, it rises to exit the pipes and ends up in the tank again, this time on the top. This leaves you with hotter water on top and colder water on the bottom, circulating and heating more and more.
If that explanation left your head spinning, then the link to this project should help.
I first heard of thermosiphoning thanks to Ampersand Project. I might be lucky enough to go there towards the end of the year and help with a retreat.
