Progressing towards the goal

Serendipitous as our life is, we have made some great strides this past month. It is the end of a wonderful chapter on our journey, and we’ll be leaving the community for a more rustic lifestyle. Thanks to good ol’ Craigslist we have found a new place to live and a new “home”.

New and updating, welcome to 2012

We’ve been out of town for a while, visiting Erin’s family over on the east coast. How awesome was your Christmas and New Year? Mine was just perfect!

We’ve been looking into the logistics of buying land and building codes etc. It’s not an easily traveled road. Land buying is not generally given any love by the banks, so you are left with owner financing. Building codes are not meant to help the owner builder, but instead make it so the “industry” gets as many of their materials inside our homes. This creates on average a %40 or more waste of materials per home built. This only applies if you plan on doing this up to code and legally of course, which we are. Since we plan on building an Eco educational B&B out of sustainable materials and practices (best case scenario).

YES!

The other day I was chatting with my friend Aaron, and he mentioned a cool magazine he’s been looking at. YES! is the publication I speak of. They are right up my alley, maybe even yours. Also they have a buy one get one free deal for their yearly subscription. No this is not spam, and no I am not getting anything from promoting them (yet at least).

Check this pdf link out as a cool example of what they got.

Is the Universe trying to tell me something?

This might be a little long winded but I have to share it with you.

Part One:

Since I’ve lived in this 2BR apartment I’ve been happy and have met many a great people in the area including my wife. I started gardening here and began my journey as a steward of life, nature and this planet we all call home.

We’ve (Erin and I) been feeling like getting out of dodge for a while and finding some land up north (Northern California). There we would build upon it natural buildings and create a living oasis of sorts, including things such as water works, food forests, live stock and host people to share the knowledge we’ve all accrued so as to pass it on to interested parties. Mostly the evolving plan.

We really wanted to do this, but our apartment is so nice, rent is so cheap and the area is so “hip”. I even have a nice area (40′ x 14′) in the back yard to garden in. This makes it hard to make the move out to the land.

green slug

Elysia chlorotica. This little gem is indigenous to the salt marshes of New England and Canada. What makes this slug so special is that it is member of both the flora and fauna kingdoms. It claims this hybrid state by producing it’s own chlorophyll, thereby gaining energy from the sun’s rays. All the baby slug needs to do is have it’s first and only meal of algae to steal some chloroplasts and from then on it’s a life of sunbathing.

Very rare lunar eclipse tonight!

Today at 10:33 pm PMT, we get the first full lunar eclipse on the day of the northern winter solstice in 400 years. Say that ten times fast. To give you some perspective on how long ago that was look here. Not only that, but it’s only the second one since year 1. Sadly we are having such crazy rain here in LA that I’m sure to not see any of it…. Oh well, at least we can harvest some rain, right?

Follow the link in NASA’s article to see a digital version of what it will look like.

Great Radio

This page has some great talks. I particularly enjoyed this one. It has three guests. The first is Penny Livingston Stark, she is the founder of RDI. A permaculture school in Bolinas California (Erin took me there for my birthday a couple of years ago. Great place to visit). She talks about the origins of permaculture and some of its applications.  Second came Dave Jacke. He speaks of edible forest gardens. Most people think of food coming from a garden or farm. How about a well thought out forest? Thirdly is Patty Karlin, she is the owner of Bodega Goat Cheese. Did you know that cows and goats apparently aren’t natural grazers? Listen to find out more.

Sick of bad News

Alternative Energy
I stopped watching TV about five years ago. I’ll catch a movie here and there…
One of the reasons was the sad excuse for news we generally get. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but Fox “News” is anything but that. I now get my news online and I feel much more aware of the pulse of the world.
Here is a good source of alternative energy news.
